Dear Burdge, something to remember is that rights are for everybody, everyone deserves them, with no question whatsoever. But another thing to remember is that your rights stop where someone else’s nose begins, and likewise their rights stop where your nose begins. Someone thinking you’re homophobic does not matter, and more importantly, whenever you have been conducting yourself in a quiet, self-affirmed way (especially on a site that hundreds are fond of - which is no small feat), while albeit not outrightly or loudly supporting or denying your beliefs about homosexuality, no one has the right to demand that you voice an opinion that you do not believe, you have not developed a belief in yet, or that you already believe. The internet is a tricky thing, every single thing you post could be viewed in China, for crying out loud! But, your tumblr is still the “end of your nose,” your personal area, and your rights dictate that you are not forced to endorse anything. Now, you do not have the right to slam homosexuality, or to endorse homophobia, as that would put you past the barrier of someone else’s “nose,” but I don’t see that in you whatsoever. I have followed your artwork for about three years and love getting on to see what you have posted. You’re tactful, artistic, and happy (the good joyful kind of happy). I think this will blow over (as all internet scandals do) and as Kurt Vonnegut and Neil Gaiman and all the other great artists beg, make good art. Please keep on making good art, Burdge. As a last note, if the tumblr base as a group is going to point fingers at an artist and call them homophobic, why not we skip the fan artists, whose main passion is recreating what someone else has already written, drawn, or filmed, and shift our attention to the true creators. Rowling did not put any homosexuals in her works, would you call her homophobic? What about Neil Gaimin in Neverwhere, or Rick Riordan, or the creaters of Korra? No. We don’t call them homophobic, we praise them for art. So likewise, Burdge, I praise you for art.
